Art For a Start

Heritage Community School

Following the successful visit of Minna Georgieva to Heritage earlier this term, involving students in workshops, tutorials and lectures about her internationally renowned art.

Minna gave a CD presentation explaining the process of layering involved in her own work inspired by the work of abstract expressionist, going on to demonstrate the methods she used with a range of media. She spoke of her personal response to ‘moments’ on the paper/canvas and suggested the students adopt the themes of ‘storm’ and ‘sunset’.
Materials were distributed and the students supervised and encouraged by both Minna and their Art teachers. Experimentation and enjoyment in the activity were obvious the outcomes being varied, vibrant and expressive. Following the activity some discussion and review of the work took place-making comparisons with the titles of work in the exhibition catalogues Minna had brought for the students.

This novel approach to themes, materials and expression of ideas was a new experience to the students – stretching their understanding and offering a change to any pre-conceptions about the validity of abstract art as well as giving valuable hands on experience with the supervised activity.
